    How should we think about the "intelligence" the field of AI aims to build? Many popular answers, such as human-level performance, human parity, or Turing-test human imitation, center on human resemblance. However, a more productive view arises when we focus on intelligence itself (the "what"), rather than pursuing a perspective fixated on human intelligence (the "who"). Through example, I bring this view to life, taking inspiration from the inclusive spectrum of animal cognition and the pre-AI history of the mechanization of computing (formerly a human occupation).
